Research for vibration isolation of a platform made by LEGO based on low cost instrumentation

Hi everyone.

My name is Rocco and I’m in the Open-Adaptronik project for my master thesis in mechanical engineering.

The aim of my project is to set up control logics capable to isolate an optical bench of the project “myphotonics” from vibrations and to find how to implement a suitable solution in the real word with the help of the other Open-Adaptronik members.

You can easily find what the “myphotonics” project concerns and how it is made here http://www.ufp.uni-osnabrueck.de/en/education/myphotonics.html

There you can also find the instructions to build your own laser experiment with LEGO bricks, which perfectly joins the purpose of Open-Adaptronik project.

For those who don’t know, to build up an active-vibration control at least a sensor, an actuator and a control board are needed. For a feedback control you will take the signal from the sensor, multiply it by a “gain” and use the result as input for your actuator, everything managed by your control board.

As first attempt I’m trying to find a good control solution in a simple case. We’ll use open source modelling tools to study the system and find out which are the parameters that most suits the problem.

At the moment I’m dealing with theoretical solutions and simulations that hopefully in the future can help as in building a real isolation control.

See you soon.
